Mercury Capri Convertible 1994 Series III

1994 The "Series III" car with several body and suspension changes was introduced for the Capri's final season.

These changes make it easy to tell the 1994 Capri from earlier models:
Front and rear (plastic) bodywork is new for both models - including new tail light design. The XR2 also received new ground effects and a different rear spoiler. Both models have "Capri" embossed in rear bumper.

• A body colored trim piece replaced the previous red and grey accent exterior trim.
• Five spoke 14" alloy wheels were made standard on the base model, while the XR2 recieves standard seven spoke 15" alloy wheels.
• Black with black carpets and trim replaced gray as the standard interior color. The gray interior is discontinued. Black leather is made standard on the XR2.
• An air conditioning system using the more ozone-friendly R134 refrigerant replaced the earlier conventional system.
• The XR2 received an improved sports suspension featuring stiffer springs, a lowered front end, ball joints instead of rubber bushings at the anti-sway bar ends, and a faster steering ratio. These changes produce a more sports car like feel.
• The XR2 also received a "graphics" package - really just some XR2 decals in front of the rear wheel and a plastic badge on the rear tailight assembly.

Engine options were still the DOHC 1.6 liter in 100 HP normally aspirated and 132 HP turbo form.

Mercury Capri Convertible 1990-1993 Series I & Series II

Features of the Series I & II Mercury Capri

All the 1990-1993 models had four-wheel disc brakes, with 10.2 inch vented discs in front and 8.7 inch solid disks in back.

The front suspension was a conventional MacPherson strut system, with stabilizer bar. The rear suspension was a fully independent trapezoidal link system, with MacPherson struts and a stabilizer bar.

The Capri had better straight line performance than the normally aspirated 1.6 liter Mazda Miata. The lighter Miata naturally handled slightly better than the Capri in the slalom. This comparison was the result of a July 1990 Road & Track magazine test of the Capri XR2i and the Mazda Miata.

The US-legal Capri "Series II" model was not available until July 1990 and was introduced as an early 1991 model. The base price was $12,588, or $15,522 for the XR2i. Five colors were available in 1991: white, platinum, red, blue, and charcoal. The convertible top was either black or white.

Steel 14 inch wheels were standard on the base model, with aluminum 14 inch wheels optional. The aluminum wheels were standard on the XR2i. Tires were 185/60-14s for both Capri models.

The 1992 Capri received new optional 15 inch wheels with low profile tires, but was not changed much from the 1991 model. List prices ranged from $13,995 to $16,695.

The 1993 Capri was nearly identical to the 1992 model. One minor change was the introduction of a better stereo system. The colors available were white, platinum, red, marine blue, stratosphere blue, green and charcoal. All cars had grey interiors. Leather seats were available as an option. Prices ranged from about $15,000 to about $18,000.

Differences between the Capri Series II and Capri Series III cars

The DOHC and DOHC Turbo versions came out in 1991. These are called "Series II" cars. These had airbags and other modifications needed to make them legal in the USA.

In 1994, the Series III was introduced. The body and suspension were slightly modified. Some Series III parts, such as the tops and the bumpers, are not interchangeable with the Series II Capris.

There were two versions imported to North America: the base version, and the hotter turbocharged Capri XR2i. Both had Mazda DOHC 1.6 liter engines. The base version was rated at an even 100 HP at 5750 RPM, and 95ft/lb of torque at 5500 RPM, while the XR2i's turbo engine was rated at 132 HP at 6000 RPM and 136 ft/lb of torque at 3000 RPM. The compression ratios were 9.4:1 for the base model and 7.9:1 for the XR2i. A five speed manual transmission was standard. A 4 speed automatic was available only on the base version.

All instruments were analog, with a 125 MPH speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, water temperature gauge, volt meter, and oil pressure gauge.

The XR2i package also included air conditioning, a number of appearance items, and an upgraded suspension. Oddly, some reviewers found the XR2i exhibited more understeer than the base model; apparently those extra "comfort and appearance" items extracted a weight penalty. The steering mechanism was apparently the same in both the base and XR2i models: power assisted rack & pinion with a 17.6:1 ratio.

Ghia Barchetta Concept Car


The Ghia Barchetta originated to fill the empty niche identified by Ford for a low cost, modern two-seat sports model, a market left unfilled in the early Eighties. Constructed on the Fiesta XR2 platform, Ghia Barchetta was never intended to be displayed publicly but rather to demonstrate that a profitable market could be developed from good design and standard production components. The Ghia Barchetta eventually inspired the Ford Australia Mercury Capri.

Constructed by Ghia on the Fiesta XR2 platform, the concept car had an 86 horsepower 1.6 liter overhead valve 4-cylinder engine. Constructed at Ghia in steel, the Ghia Barchetta concept car's construction emphasized the economy of design inherent in its front-wheel drive platform while displaying the good looks and style of larger packages. The matte dark grey bumpers give Ghia Barchetta a dressed-up look and highlight its rounded wedge profile.

The realization of the Ghia Barchetta so enthused the sports car fans among Ford Europe's management that the intention to use it only as a demonstration was rethought and it was publicly displayed in 1983 as a concept illustrating the versatility of Ford's FWD powertrain and chassis components. Built as an operating concept, Ghia Barchetta has a fully functional cloth soft top and rides on 13" cast alloy wheels with 185/60HR-13 Goodyear NCT tires. Ghia's strength among Ford's several design studios was its ability, in a very short period, to construct a functional concept, very close to the production realization. Ghia Barchetta demonstrates that capability.

The Ghia Barchetta concept bodywork is exceptional, functioning well and displaying smooth panels that would be enviable on a restored car, much less on one that has seen potentially exhaustive use as a concept demonstrator and show car. Review of the Capri XR2

THE XR2 was a new addition to the Capri model line-up in the revised SC series introduced in April, 1992. The Capri was a neat package of small front-wheel convertible with a rear bench seat and some useful luggage space.


The Capri appealed to people who wanted a practical, fun vehicle rather than an outright sports car. The detachable hardtop provided a more comfortable, secure interior with the bonus of stiffening the car and reducing familiar behavior of open-top cars where the dashboard vibrates visibly on rough roads.

The XR2 was available with a normally aspirated or turbocharged engine. Standard equipment included power steering, electric windows, power mirrors and alloy wheels.

The XR2 Turbo added leather interior trim with matching leather-bound steering wheel and driving lights. Options for both models were a hardtop, air-conditioning and a CD player.

The SE series XR2 and XR2 Turbo released in August, 1993, had styling changes that included more rounded front and rear bumpers and side skirts. The interior trim was upgraded and cruise control became standard equipment, as did central locking.

Capri engines, along with many other mechanical components, are Mazda sourced and similar to those used in the Ford Laser.

Both EFI and turbocharged engines are 1.6-litre, twin cam fours with 16-valve cylinder heads. Power output is 77kW or 100kW for the turbocharged engine.

Transmissions are a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic. The turbo was only available with manual transmission.

Suspension is by MacPherson struts and coil springs at the front and transverse links and coil springs at the rear. Anti-roll bars are fitted front and rear.

The engine, being an older design, is not as smooth or refined as some of its rivals, particularly the Nissan NX. Performance of the standard XR2 is similar to the Toyota Paseo while the XR2 Turbo is equal to the best of its rivals.

Handling is safe and predictable with minimal body roll due to the low centre of gravity. Transverse engine, front-wheel drive layout causes understeer that increases as cornering speeds rise.

Durability of the Capri mechanical components has never been in doubt but the turbocharged engines do not last as long as normally aspirated engines, particularly if they have been neglected or had a hard life.

Early Capris did have some weather proofing problems that allowed water to leak into the interior. There were a number of modifications and upgrades and by the time the SE Capri was released water leaks were not so much of a problem.

Restoring the 1991 Mercury Capri with Mazda 323 Engine and Transmission

Since the

1991 Mercury Capri

was built with Mazda 323 engines and transmissions, the availability of the Mazda engine parts makes restoration less of a problem.

The Capri engine and transmission can be replaced with those from the 1988-89 Mazda 323 GT and GTX. The transmission is the same as the 323 GT. The transmission from the 1989 323 GT should be a good match for the gear ratios.

If your Capri restoration project car has transmission trouble, using a 4 speed manual or 5 speed manual transmission out of the 1989 Mazda 323 can be a less expensive way to get back on the road.

Other pleasing features of the standard Capri and the upscale XR2 are the standard performance offerings, which are true signs of the Mercury luxury touch and make some of the competition look positively threadbare by comparison. Power windows, map pockets, four-speaker, lumbar-support sports seats, height adjustable driver's seat, halogen headlamps, three speed wipers and dual electric remote mirrors are all part of the Capri package. The XR2 adds power locks, stereo cassette player, fog lamps, air conditioning, speed-control, rear spoiler, alloy wheels, suspension upgrades and turbo engine.

Inside, the driver's layout is pleasingly simple with an analog dash for the standard Capri as well as for the XR2. The center of the instrument cluster features a pair of large dials for speed and engine rpm neatly surrounded by oil pressure, engine temperature, voltage and fuel-level indicators. A large glovebox is also part of the dash-a pleasing return to the days when you could actually store personal items, gloves for example, in the glovebox.

The seating in the XR2 comes with a driver's seat height adjuster and a positional lumbar support lever. The front seats also offer expansive fore and aft movement. Regular three-point seat belts back up the drivers-side air bag. The 2+2 seating arrangements are snug for four adults, but the Capri can hold that many when such flexibility is needed. The rear seats also come with three-point belts and attachment points for child safety restraints.

The Capri Design and the 1983 Barchetta

There were 18,770 1991 Capri's made. Total production was 63,693 cars. There were both right and left hand drive cars manufactured. The cars were assembled in Ford's Broadmeadows Assembly Plant in the Melbourne suburb of Campbellfield, Victoria, Australia.

The production Capri was based on the successful 1983 Ford of Europe, Fiesta-based Ghia-designed 2-seat convertible called the Barchetta (little boat). The Capri exterior was styled by Ford's "Ghia" design studio. The engineering, the interior & folding roof were done by "Ital design" an Italian engineering/design firm. The chassis was a modified Mazda 323, mechanicals (engine, transaxle, brakes, suspension & steering) were also from a modified 1988-1990 Mazda 323, manufactured & supplied by "Mazda Motors", a Ford Asian partner.

The Ford product progress manager was Dave Fewchuck. He was assigned to the Capri project in early 1984. Dave saw the Capri through development, manufacturing, marketing & was in charge of the brand until production ended.

There were two models, the base version, and the upgraded turbo charged XR2. Both had DOHC 1.6 liter engines (96 ci). The base version was rated at an even 100 HP at 5750 RPM, and 95ft/LB of torque at 5500 RPM, while the XR2 turbo engine was rated at 132 HP at 6000 RPM and 136 ft/LB of torque at 3000 RPM. A fully synchronized five speed manual transmission was standard. A four speed EAT (Electronic Automatic Transmission) was available only on the base non turbo model.

The "Ford Capri" was initially offered in Australia 1989. In late 1990 it was marketed & sold in the US as a "Mercury Capri". Ford hoped a sporty convertible would encourage younger and female customers into Mercury dealerships, where the customer base was primarily older males.

The Capri was not an immediate sales success. Ford targeted first year sales of 30,000, but less than 21,000 were actually sold, & production decreased each of the three subsequent years.

The engine and drivetrain is a Mazda 1.6L, intercooled turbo, 4 valves per cylinder, double overhead cam, 4 cylinder engine. It is the same as the Mazda 323GTX. The transaxle is a 5 speed manual. 0-60 time is about 7 seconds.

1994 Capri Improvements

A 1994 press release from Mercury allowed the company to brag about improvements in the what would turn out to be the final year of the front wheel drive sporty car.

"In September our Lincoln-Mercury dealers will introduce the 1994 Capri," said a Ford spokeswoman. "We believe that the customers will be impressed with the improvements in the functional and interior packaging ... We think the quality problems have been addressed."

She said Lincoln-Mercury had ordered enough '94 Capris to make sure it would be available through the coming model year. Ford expected to sell about 12,400 Capris in U.S. in the 1993 model year and about the same in the 1994 model year. Ford of Australia sold 1,034 Capris domestically in 1992, making it the top-selling convertible in that country. However, only 55,000 were shipped to the U.S. since the car was introduced in 1990. When the car was being developed in the mid-1980s company officials expected U.S. sales of 30,000 to 35,000 annually.

The third-generation Capri XR2 for the Australian market has slimmer jeweled-lens taillights, cruise control, power doorlocks with illuminated rocker switches on the doors, CFC-free R13a air conditioner refrigerant, a new rotary compressor and overdrive on-off control. Its bumpers have been redesigned for a more rounded profile that extends the theme around the body, the front lower air intake and front outer apertures have been resculpted, the integrated skirt-type spoilers are more prominent and deeper, and there are five new colors -- the most striking of which are a cobalt blue and reef green.

The center console is restyled with padded armrests/lid and cupholders, the headlamp switch is now on the dash rather than the console and it's now easier to adjust the seat height and lumbar pad with improved levers. The base interior color changes from Raven Black to grey, and all front seats are redesigned with longer cushions, bigger side bolsters, firmer padding and map pockets.

The pressure-proportioning valve on the brakes has been revised so there's more pressure to the rear, and the mounting for the rear caliper has been changed to cut the low-speed brake noise.

Although these improvements were announced for the '94 Australia-bound Capri, the XR2 and XR2 Turbo also are exported to the U.S.


Staying in Australia was the Capri Club-sprint, fondly called the Batman car by its designers because of fairings behind the seats. Because this version had no air bag and fiberglass bumpers, the Club-sprint wasn't legal to import to America.

Mercury Capri Sales

In 1992 the Mercury Capri outsold every sporty car in Australia including the Mitsubishi Galant, Honda CRX, Toyota MR2, Mazda MX5, all Audis, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Nissan 300ZX, Porsche, Mazda RX7 and Toyota Supra. During production Capri outsold the Mazda MX5 by two to one in Australia. Capri also outsold the Mazda MX5 for nine months in the US in 1993.

Everyone expected Ford's new Capri to fill a gap in the sports convertible market. The Capri's standard equipment included power steering, electric windows and mirror and alloy wheels. Eventually the series II Capri was released, introducing a twin cam engine for the base Capri with standard engine and fixing problems found in earlier models.

So why did Ford stop production after only 5 years?
The Mazda MX5 was released at the same time at a similar price. Many writers at automotive magazines compared the two cars. The MX5 was more of a traditional sports car. The Capri was more of a city car with comforts that the MX5 didn't offer, like additional room in the backseat to fit 2 kids.

Eventually, the mounting costs of producing an upgraded model of the Capri for 1995, combined with declining sales meant that Ford Australia could not afford to produce the Capri without losing money.

Installing a V8 engine in the 91-94 Capri

On several internet forums I've seen people speculating about replacing the standard four cylinder Capri engines with a V6 or V8.

While increasing the horsepower of this fairly light car sounds like a fun idea, the layout of the car seems like it won't support the bigger engine. The 1991-1994 Capri is set up as a front wheel drive car and a V-8 or V-6 would require a rear wheel drive layout. It would be very difficult to add a driveshaft and rear-drive transmission to the Capri's chassis.

Of course, if you happen to have a huge budget and an urge for racing then you can add a 5.8 Liter V8, and just rebuild the Capri around the engine. The picture above is a Capri, custom-built for drag racing. You're sure to get better quarter-mile times than the stock engine Capri.

Acceleration is adequate with the base engine and a lot quicker with the turbocharged XR2. Unfortunately the XR2 suffers from moderate torque steer. Shift action with the 5-speed manual transmission is quick and sure. The Capri is nimble in turns, as long as you don't take the turn too fast. The front-wheel drive makes it easier to handle in tricky situations. The new sport suspension for the '94 XR2 sharpened its handling.

Capris do have a rear seat, but little leg room. Only small children or luggage can ride in the rear seat. The Capri's cabin is surprisingly wide in the front seat. The instruments and controls are neatly arranged. A Capri's trunk can stow grocery bags standing up, and might hold 2 or 3 suitcases for a couple. The plastic back of the convertible top may be prone to scratches and wrinkles.

Convertibles are not practical family cars. But if you find one for a good price, the Capri can be a fun car. Overall, the Capri is good on fuel economy, handling and comfortable driver seating.
